Grades of Green Youth Board Member Creates Green Week Pledge Wall

Grades of Green youth board member, Maddie Barkate, helped create a pledge wall during green week at her school, St. Margaret’s.  During green week, fellow students pledged what they were going to do to be more green on the green week pledge wall at school.  Some of these pledges included plating fuits and veggies, taking shorter showers and using a reusable lunch box.

On April 28th, St. Matthew’s Parish School held an electronic waste recycling event and collected 6,903 pounds of E-waste.

Grades of Green Kids Influential in Hermosa Beach Decision to Ban Polystyrene Ban

Eight Grades of Green kids were the catalyst for Hermosa Beach becoming even greener March 27 by banning styrofoam in city restaurants.  The third grade Hermosa Valley students each presented their case on why polystyrene should be banned.  One such student, Matt, opened by exclaiming how polystyrene lasts 500 years: “500 years! That’s a long time, right?!”

Mayor Recognizes Grades of Green Youth Board Advisor and her Green Team's Composting Efforts at St. Margaret's Lower School

One of Grades of Green’s Youth Board Advisors, Maddie Barkate and her school’s Green Team received a Certificate of Recognition from San Juan Capistrano Mayor Larry Kramer for their composting efforts.  Maddie, a 5th grader who is the Green Team leader at St. Margaret’s Lower School, and the Green Team approached their assistant principal with various ideas on how they could green their school.  They decided to pursue a composting program.  With the help of CR&R Waste and Recycling Services and education programs put on by the Green Team, the composting program has been a huge success, leading to the recognition.  Congratulations Maddie and the St. Margaret’s Green Team!  To read the full article, click here
